You’re right. I’m Filipino and was born in the Philippines, and we never claimed to be Pacific Islanders. I only noticed after moving to the U.S. that some Filipino-Americans actually identify themselves as Pacific Islanders. I was so confused, like what? 😭

She’s right. We Filipinos aren’t Pacific Islanders. That’s a term applicable to the Polynesian islands. If we use this term, then Japanese & Alaskans are Pacific Islanders..

i think this depends on who you're asking. if you ask a native-born filipino, they would say they're asians, but most american-born filipinos claim pacific islander. When i got based in the Philippines for work, majority of my filipino friends affiliate themselves to asia. It got confusing when i got transferred to LA because most of the filipinos there don't think they're asians

I love my Pinoy cousins but please do not claim Pacific Islander. There are only 11 million of us. There are 130 million of them. Would you identify a group based off of 8% or the majority? If Filipinos took Pacific islander then that would pretty much make all of us a subgroup of Filipinos.

Wanna argue… lets… Philippines is LITERALLY in the PACIFIC OCEAN, 🙄 LITERALLY…. So the people that live in it are pacific islander… and Philippines are Island… it was change to Asia due to some European power who doesnt know what they were doing

Filipino living in the PH. Not a single one of us here would ever think we're Pacific Islanders. Do not listen to those that say we are "othered" from other ASEAN countries. We are not. We share similar foods, cultural practices, language, history, and dysfunctional governments okay (SG this does not apply)!!

I feel like only Filipinos in the US does that which is weiiiirdd I’m born and raised in the Philippines never heard anyone claiming they’re pacific islanders. We’re fully Southeast Asian, our culture is closer to Thailand during the precolonial period than Pacific Islanders.

I’m a Filipino who grew up in Hawai’i and I will tell you that not a single Filipino I’ve ever known that grew up on an actual pacific island claimed to be Polynesian. I get we have austronesian roots, and some of them did migrate to parts of Polynesia but even the ancient austronesians that migrated originated from like Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
