I had to read the Count of Monte Cristo for AP lang in my junior year of HS over the summer…. I hated it back then. Bc I was forced and because who makes students read that large of a book over the summer? PLUS WE HAD TO READ A SECOND BOOK! I do remember generally liking the storyline but I couldn’t get over the fact that it took up a lot of my summer.

I’m reading 26 pages of East of Eden every day before the Netflix movie (which is unusual for me because I usually read 50 pages of a book in a sitting). I’m only on paid 63 but I’m already loving it. It’s definitely one I need to savour.

The time period of the 1930s (Grapes of Wrath) vs the late 1940s (On the Road) should feel different. The country was desperately poor in the 1930s, people were out of work and mostly uneducated. WWIII changed everything. A road trip by a middle class kid, paid for with local jobs along the way just didn’t happen.
