We took my son to NOLA last year and after the 2nd day there he asked, “Why does everyone still talk about Hurricane Katrina 20 years later?” It’s difficult to explain how these cataclysmic events fundamentally shift/impact every aspect of our culture: from religion, racism, classism, national security, fear, violence, war, government leaders, tv & movies, travel, economic instability, politics, etc. It changes absolutely EVERYTHING.

the reason why younger generations aren't sympathetic to this is because sure, we see live streams of ppl dying because of America's actions everyday, you guys thought your lives were over, mean while America actually destroyed entire lives,societies and countries.

A major reason is that America almost NEVER received significant attacks on its own soil in the 20th Century onward. Before 9/11, the last major one was Pearl Harbor, which was such a big deal it got us into WWII.

The part that messed with my head was that between the two impacts, we didn’t know that it WAS an attack. I’m standing there brushing my teeth, thinking “Wow, that’s a really bad accident. I wonder what kind of malfunction caused that.” Because at that point, a really messed up and unlikely accident genuinely seemed more plausible.

I was in 6th grade. My parents had just renewed their vows on the 8th and were in Virginia Beach. My sisters and I were being watched by our grandmother. I remember them rolling the TVs into our classroom and watching what happened live. Being called to the office to be picked up. I had taken a picture of my parents to school because they’d never been away from us. I took it out and put it in my jacket thinking I might never see them again. We went home and sat together watching the news and crying. Just hoping that they would make it home to us before anything could get worse. For me there has been nothing like that day. 2008 and 2020 changed things. But not like 9/11.

We felt so safe in the 90’s that bad things only happened in other places. Seeing this broke that. We had no clue who did it, which made it scarier. I also believe America peaked in the 90’s and 9/11 was the turning point.

This generation is used to seeing catastrophes live. They’ve never known any different. All trust in government is long gone. Our bubble was busted on 9/11. They’ve never known that false comfort.

I remember what flying was like before 9/11. And all I did that day was watch the news 😳 and then we got TSA and the patriot act which really set the stage for surveillance and the erosion of privacy.
