As a cop… I think the most important point you made that people truly misunderstand and can’t imagine is that normal behaviors/routines/logic/rationalizing/planning and actively experiencing psychosis are not mutually exclusive. Unless you have experience seeing people in psychosis, I get that it’s hard to understand. For example, if someone truly believes there are people living in their walls. That doesn’t mean they forget how to shower, drive, talk to real people, and rationalize. They can still rationalize regarding other things like the fact they need to feed the kids and lock their front doors, they just cannot rationalize when it comes to their specific delusions.

Not a professional but a mom of an adult son who was in and out of psychosis for two years (battling the system to get him help for two years too). I’ve seen his psychosis. There was a summer he decided to be homeless because of the psychosis and lived down by the river. He’s medicated right now and would never voluntarily give up the roof over his head. He was also convinced we were all part of a conspiracy to medicate him so he couldn’t have kids. He planned and did things that were not who he is in his right mind. Even on days he seemed “normal”. He was still sick! Still in psychosis. I think people expect psychosis to look like some incoherent person - it’s not TV. The reality of it is so different.

As a new nurse working the postpartum floor I took care of a young woman that was psychotic. She tried to smother her newborn because she was convinced that he was an alien. She believed that an alien had inseminated her and that the baby was evil. Otherwise she talked and behaved normally, but her delusion was very real to her. She was sent to our local mental health facility upon leaving us and the baby went home with her parents. PPP is very real.

I appreciate your psychological stand point, and I’m not saying you are wrong, but the facts don’t add up in this case, that she did this. Down to the DNA and the timing of events. They weaponized her mental health. Of course she could have done it, but she most likely didn’t, due to the evidence presented. And that’s why it’s good to know the facts before speaking. Every case is different.

Then either she’s criminally negligent for lying to therapists, medication & therapist shopping or this case sets us back & we go back to how it used to be for centuries where men can commit us when we have PND. As a labour theatre nurse she knew more than most what could happen if she didn’t follow her treatment plan. If she was too far gone with her mental health to have been responsible for it then we go back to how it was. We can’t have it both ways & not see more victims.

I’m a psychiatric NP- I just cannot with the general public. It’s infuriating! But these folks saying death penalty is sad. Hope they never have this or a family member! It’s not black and white folks!! Premeditated? Soo ridiculous?!! Exactly!!! They aren’t forgetting. They never knew it. They aren’t educated on it.

I’m retired forensic psych RN (Atascadero State Hospital) I agree with you. My take on it is Bipolar 1 having a mixed episode. She said she felt that the antidepressants made her worse and that makes total sense. They are activating. No one ever prescribed her a mood stabilizer . If they had those kids might be alive.

My MIL was in psychosis and we had to call SWAT on her bc she threatened to blow up a building. Then she threw poo at her nurses bc she thought they were trying to unalive her. She spit on faught with the cops that took her to the hospital. It was absolutely awful

Yes but that’s not the evidence presented. Two things can be true. She could’ve been experiencing PPP. There is not enough evidence to show she did it. People are saying her husband did it bc that’s how the evidence is point out … only his dna on the murder weapon, his timeline not adding up etc

Even with all the treatments !!!!!!! It did NOT prevent her for doing the ultimate act of betrayal !! So let’s not set this stage for people thinking that being on their meds will prevent them from killing people and of story !!

THANK YOU!! I wish I could send this to everyone who will not educate themselves on mental health. I know someone who goes through psychosis and these comments are making me so mad. I don’t think Patrick should have ever left her alone for one minute with the thoughts she was having. I know someone who thought she was in a relationship with a celebrity and has 2 trespassing arrests. She also heard voices to unalive herself with her son in her bed. It was a failed attempt. If the voices told her to hurt him she would have done it.

Its because people truly don't understand mental illnesses. We had a friend going through a manic episode who was undiagnosed bipolar and I witnessed him go through a psychosis. Some friends still didn't understand it and talked about him poorly and made fun of him. I tried so hard to get them to understand he was dealing with an undiagnosed mental disorder!!!
