“Tragic Explosion During Training — Inside a JGSDF Type 10 Tank Incident” A tragic incident involving the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) occurred earlier today. At approximately 08:39 JST (06:39 WIB), during a live-fire exercise at the Hijudai Training Area in Oita Prefecture, a Type 10 tank from the Western Army was conducting firing drills when a round suddenly detonated inside the main gun barrel. There were four crew members inside the vehicle at the time. Three were killed instantly, while one sustained injuries. Following the incident, Japanese media and defense observers began examining possible causes. According to analysis attributed to former JGSDF commander Katsuki Takata, the Type 10’s firing system is highly advanced and designed with multiple safety mechanisms. Its autoloader ensures that the breech automatically closes and locks before firing, and the gun cannot be discharged unless this lock is fully secured, making a mechanical failure of the breech system unlikely. Instead, attention has shifted toward the possibility of a rare misfire scenario. In such cases, a round may fail to detonate when fired or ignite with a delay, known as a hang fire. Standard procedure requires the crew to wait before taking further action. If the round does not fire, it must be manually extracted after opening the breech. It is believed that the explosion may have occurred during this process. The round could have detonated unexpectedly while still inside the barrel or at the moment it was being removed. If this happens after the breech is opened, the blast can travel directly back into the turret, resulting in catastrophic internal damage. #JGSDF #Type10Tank #TankAccident #MilitaryNews #DefenseAnalysis
