If these people are being pulled away from their families and civilian careers, sent into a dangerous Middle East deployment, and there is no realistic prospect they are coming home soon, then stop playing word games. If formally recognizing the conflict as a war would trigger additional pay, tax treatment, or benefits for the people actually putting their lives on the line, then call it what it is and give them every benefit they have earned. You don’t get to demand wartime sacrifice while hiding behind peacetime terminology when it comes time to compensate the troops.
