What you’re watching is history in the making. This is NASA’s X-43A, nicknamed “Hyper-X”, a 12-foot-long, 3,300-pound scramjet-powered experimental aircraft that rewrote the record books. On November 16, 2004, NASA made history by launching the X-43A into the atmosphere, achieving Mach 10 speed, nearly ten times the speed of sound, at roughly 110,000 feet. At that velocity, the aircraft was clocking approximately 7,000 mph. To put that in perspective, at sustained Mach 10, a jet could theoretically circle the entire globe in just about three hours, compared to the 40+ hours it would take a commercial airliner. The X-43A didn’t use a conventional engine. It was powered by a supersonic combustion ramjet, a “scramjet”, integrated with the aircraft’s lower fuselage, where air enters the engine at supersonic speeds and combustion happens without slowing the airflow down. At Mach 10, surface temperatures can exceed 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, so the aircraft was built using advanced carbon-carbon composites capable of maintaining structural integrity under intense thermal stress. The X-43A wasn’t launched from the ground, it was carried aloft by a modified B-52 Stratofortress, then boosted to hypersonic speeds via a Pegasus rocket before the scramjet ignited. The scramjet engine itself burned for approximately 10 seconds, followed by a 10-minute hypersonic glide, after which the vehicle intentionally crashed into the Pacific Ocean, as it was never designed to be recovered. That world speed record for an air-breathing aircraft has remained unbroken for over 22 years. The dream? Using this technology to one day power aircraft that can carry passengers anywhere on Earth in a fraction of the time, or serve as the first stage of a reusable space launch vehicle. The future of speed looks a lot like this. Credits: NASA #NASA #HypersonicFlight #X43A #ScramjetTechnology #FutureOfAviation
