It’s not a trend. It’s true. I married young, at the age of 20. I had stars in my eyes because I was taught that marriage and a husband would complete me. I am a professional and I carried the bulk of the financial weight, I worked crazy shifts, took care of the babies, did all the housework, cooked, supported him in every way. He was selfish and entitled. He would save his money, he would relax in front of the TV while I worked late into the night l, there was no conscience whatsoever. To him I was a means to an end. He continued living like he was single, he neglected me and never invested in me. I still fought to make my marriage work for the sake of my boys, waiting on him to change. I waited for 25 years for a miracle and let me tell you, he became worse and by then I was completely detached. I am now 46 years old, I eventually saw my worth and chose myself and I divorced him. It’s the greatest gift I gave myself. I would advise every single young woman out there, DO NOT GET MARRIED. They will seem like they are everything you need and then they start changing, they will change. Marriage was designed by the patriarchy so that even the poorest man could have a slave and that’s the truth. If you choose to marry, ensure that you put yourself first, study, be financially independent, ensure that you have savings and that you become the very best version of yourself. Never shrink yourself or dumb yourself down to make a man comfortable. I wish someone would have told me this as a young woman.
