Insulin resistance isn’t created by one food or one blood sugar spike. It’s the pattern that matters. Finish a meal and sit for hours? You’re missing an easy opportunity to use movement to help your muscles take up glucose. A 10-minute walk after eating can make a difference. Spend most of your day sitting, lose muscle as you age, sleep poorly and regularly drink too much alcohol, and you’re stacking behaviours that can work against metabolic health. Food choices matter too. Fruit juice removes much of the fibre you’d get from whole fruit, making it easier to consume sugar quickly without the same fullness. But don’t turn this into fear around carbohydrates or oats. A bowl of oats does not automatically make someone insulin resistant. Your overall diet, body composition, activity, muscle mass, sleep and genetics matter far more. If you’re concerned about insulin resistance, don’t diagnose yourself from symptoms or a glucose spike. Speak with your doctor and look at the bigger picture. Fasting glucose, HbA1c and, where appropriate, fasting insulin and measures such as HOMA-IR can provide useful context. Then focus on the fundamentals. Lift weights. Stay active. Eat enough protein. Get leaner if needed. Sleep properly.
