@xiandivyne: I am, however, excited, by many aspects of this. I really love the detailing on the clothing materials #fyp #xiandivyne #gaming #legendofzelda #ocarinaoftime

Focus M has done horrible damage because respectfully this game is beautiful and if you don’t like the art style that’s fine. But its looks fine great even. The conversation of this games looks just feels like wind waker all over again just in the opposite direction.

When I say “unreal slop” I’m talking about unreal engine. Sorry about confusion in this video. Sometimes I’m using unreal as in the gaming engine and sometimes I’m talking about something looking not real

You switched to the unreal fan remake and it took me 3 more cuts to realize it wasn’t even the official remake

It’s the eyeballs. Everything is 3D except the eyeballs, they are flat cartoonish. It gives these uncanny dolls!

To me the characters all look like glazed porcelain dolls. The lighting definitely adds to that

Can someone please explain what “unreal slop” is? I know it’s referencing unreal engine 5 and the huge bump games have gotten in graphics over the past few years but what’s so bad about a game looking better or more detailed?

Learning the characters are based off of traditional puppets helped me realize why the Kokiri Forest area looks so bad. The life-size puppetry I have learned emphasizes making background distinct so it can be reflected onto performer costumes. The overly bright areas lack dark shadows and distinctly black components to the display. Especially since the character models (especially Link) catch light so well it is too much of a wash if there is an overly bright background.

My biggest issue is how many people kind of gloss over talking about how it looks. They say “it looks good you guys are just mad yadda yadda” like it looks like it’s high fidelity but like something FEELS off. For me it’s kid link cause that boy looks weird af 😭

I think it's also the fact that the characters inherited the cartoonish proportions of the original, but then they have an extremely high fidelity, almost photorealistic art style. it's the uncanny valley, but only just barely. I mean this is young zelda. idk if I'm just tripping but this just looks bad to me

also when you put it side by side with what cryzenx created you'll notice a lot of differences. this is a more cohesive presentation lovingly filled with detail that don't stick out at all. and i feel like the overdesign choices of link adds to that fish out of water typa vibe that he has in the original game. he's unprepared and his world got turned upside down and he's tasked with defeating the greatest evil the world has ever seen at the age of 10, when he should be playing roblox and hide and seek with his neighbor-girlfriend Saria.

it clashes with art direction a lot of times cause you need a solid color profile for the lighting in each area to make them stand out from one another, but they just stick with standard volumetrics usually it’s kinda lame.

I think we’ve just grown so accustomed to Cel shading and Chibi design when it comes to Zelda games specifically. It’s a very different looking game I couldn’t even compare it to Twilight Princess. The characters almost look like Dolls and humanistically looking puppets, and honestly I think that was the point.

Also incredibly disappointing that they feminized Sheik to that extent man, literally just looks like Zelda, there’s no mystery to it at all. Feels weird that the 30 year old game is more willing to play with the boundaries of gender presentation than the modern game. What happened to Sheik’s shoulders 😭

it's the outdoor lighting and the level of texture detail being way beyond the topology level of detail; so you lose huge amounts of contrast. in motion it's not quite as terrible because of blurring, but it's just so needlessly busy. like every design decision makes sense in isolation but not as part of the whole.

yeah realistic lighting and environment on top of stylized art is uncanny Ai feeling. they aren't daring enough to customize the lighting and environment anymore

The gap in detail between the castle town NPCs and Link doesn’t help. Every part of Link’s outfit is super detailed and ornate in a way that looks so ugly to me, then you see the Castle Town NPCs and they look like they came from a completely different game, whose artstyle I vastly prefer. Also really don’t like the controllable camera, fixed camera in OoT felt so good in so many places, so many intentional angles that made the world feel intentionally designed for it, and to just make it fully controllable detracts from that imo

It’s so ugly, I’m sorry. If anyone other than Nintendo made it it’d be torn to SHREDS. The random mismatch of art styles, the off-putting character designs, the absolutely horrendous voice acting. The only nice thing I’ll say is some of the more open environments looked alright.

Yea I think some contemporary games are just soo afraid to be dark and not show off graphic fidelity. A forest should have warm, dappled lighting but most “unreal slop” games have lighting like a hospital so you can see all the details rather than feel a vibe ya know.

I think the biggest thing causing this is refusing to breathe more life into the characters. Link looks like a lifeless doll. The Crash N. Sane Trilogy had a lot of these same problems but because they kept the character extremely cartoony and expressive it worked. Link looks like he can't emote. None of them really do. That's also a big problem with the "Nintendo hire this man" guys. Look at Mario 64 unreal vs Mario Odyssey. In the modern era you have to have your character being expressive. Link in BotW is extremely expressive and alive. Look at him holding up a deku nut, what emotion is that???
