Sometimes what comes out is a decade instead of a number, late 50s when the number is 62, and sometimes it's the sentence straight after, the one about being in better shape than men 10 years younger, which nobody asked for. Here's the part men don't believe. She had it roughly right weeks ago. Not exactly, but close, and from things you have no control over. If you have children she worked their ages out over dinner without moving her face. Your hands have been on the table in front of her since the first night, and hands age faster than a face does. None of it was detective work, it assembled itself. So she already knew and she stayed, which tells you the number was never what she was deciding about. What she's waiting for is one sentence long. Men wait months instead and get found out. Someone I know found her boyfriend's passport in a kitchen drawer on a Tuesday. He'd told her 58. She stood there counting backwards while he was in the next room asking what she wanted to do on Saturday. She waited 9 days before she asked him. Then she ended it, and not over the 6 years.
