Come to the south. There’s none of that nonsense here, we use practical directions…like left at the giant chicken and right at the oak tree that looks like a T Rex. If you hit the Methodist church playground you’ve gone too far.

I’m born and raised in the US and I have issues with directions telling me to go north or south or east no give me landmarks!

I'm German and whenever I use Google Maps and it tells me "Start heading southwest", I feel compelled to answer "Ay Captain!" like I'm on a 16th century ship. And then I still have to look at the map to figure out where to go...

I'm in Washington state, when someone asks how far away something is we say 13 miles. I lived in NJ for a time, when you asked how far away something was they would say 20 minutes. what kind of answer is that? 20 minutes at 2am is not the same distance as 20 minutes at 5pm.

I think that's just where you live bestie. Ain't none of that where I live. Here it's "Go straight up the road a piece, hang a left at the McDonald's, and then it'll be just past the car wash on the right." Lol. If you tried that Cardinal direction thing here you'd get, "The fuck I look like, Lewis and Clark?" 😂

Continue it your direction of travel then turn right at the burned down barn. After passing over Bally's creek, make a left on the tar and chip road and turn right at the silage mound into the lomg sand driveway where wou will see the house just over a ridge.

all the roads in the US are based off map grid. even the interstates. odd numbers run North to South and even numbers run East to West. it's engrained in the culture

It's probably due to the difference in town planning! The US largely has a grid layout for streets, so it's easy to know N, S E & W. In Europe road layout grew organically over many years through usage before (literally) being set in stone. So, the roads go from landmark to landmark and ignore the compass.
