Matthew 6:6–8 does not say that public prayer is forbidden. Jesus was correcting the motive and manner of prayer, not banning prayer in public. When Jesus said, “go into your room and shut the door,” He was teaching His followers not to pray for the purpose of being seen and praised by people. The issue was hypocrisy and seeking human recognition. If Jesus intended to forbid public prayer altogether, that would contradict other parts of the Bible where people clearly pray together publicly. For example, the early Christians “joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14), and the church prayed together in Acts 4:24–31. Also, immediately after Matthew 6:6–8, Jesus teaches the Lord’s Prayer to His disciples. The prayer begins, “Our Father,” showing that prayer can also have a communal dimension. So Matthew 6:6 means: pray privately and sincerely, without performing for people not that public prayer is forbidden. The Bible condemns prayer done to impress people, not prayer done publicly with a genuine heart. There is a difference between praying publicly to be seen by people and praying publicly while genuinely seeking God.
