Soy Morena. 🇲🇽🪶 I live in U.S board and across Mexico boarder — and I don’t classify myself through the colonial racial categories America created to divide Indigenous peoples. I know who I am. I am an Indigenous American, and my relationship to this land isn’t something I learned from a modern political map. My indigenous roots existed here long before today’s borders, governments, racial labels, and political identities racial classification and misnomers were imposed upon us. The Indigenous histories of the Americas including Mexico are ancient, interconnected, and much bigger than the categories we’ve been handed. Maya. Olmec. Mexica/Aztec. Inca. And the countless Indigenous tribes whose names, languages, identities, territories, and communities changed through migration, intermarriage, conquest, assimilation, renaming, and colonization. And let’s be clear: Spanish is not the Indigenous tribal language of Mexico and neither is English within the U.S . Those languages arrived through colonization. Before the Spaniards , British, Portuguese and French , these lands were already home to hundreds of Indigenous languages, cultures, nations, and civilizations. So yes — I speak Spanish (kinda) . But speaking or not speaking the colonizer’s language does not make me Spanish or any less indigenous to the land historically . And being assigned a racial category created within another country’s colonial framework does not define my Indigenous identity. Soy Morena. My copper-colored skin, my features, my ancestry, my history, and my relationship to this land are mine to understand and name. I don’t need permission to know my history. And I don’t need someone else’s political system to tell me who I am. Mexico is America. America is Mexico. The borders are political.
