Toddlers are capable of accomplishing so much when you know how to give them directions in a developmentally appropriate way. Toddlers lack executive function skills (the brain’s ability to plan, organize, impulse control, and think ahead because their prefrontal cortex is still developing). This makes it hard for them to know where to start and what specific steps need to be taken to complete a task, so you need to do that for them by giving an extremely specific set of directions instead of 1 broad one. Next, you need to give them time to process (around 10 seconds—but some toddlers need more time than that) so that you aren’t setting them up for frustration and defiance. Look at them very pleasantly as you wait and count to 10 in your head…you’ll be shocked at how much more often they listen just by giving them enough time. After that, positively reinforce each step that they complete. If they still refuse, assume it’s a skills issue and tell them, “either you can do it or we can do it together!” The drive for autonomy is so strong that usually they don’t want help, but if they do, work WITH them to accomplish the task. Either way, it gets done and you held your boundary.
