@nate_brad508: Why a good colt starter is so important. This video is a longer one. 4.5 minutes of a 40 minute work. But it showcases the exact importance of a good colt starter. This mare is 6 years old. She was bought from a sale, by a client of mine, earlier this summer. She rode her 5 or so times after the sale and things went well. After a few weeks of sitting. She sent her to me to see what she is, and put a little tune up. Right from the start I noticed the mare was a bit anxious. But it wasn’t until I put a foot in the stirrup, that I learned just how anxious. By the end of the video, I ride her around a minute or two and all goes very well. But there’s a big hole between the ground and getting on her back. As a colt starter, my job is to create a rock solid foundation. To ingrain the basics into them, make it as natural as breathing. - Lunging - Saddling - Bridling - Mounting - Walk, Trot, Lope Just to name a few. Unfortunately for this mare. Holes were left in her foundation. Her process was rushed and she was left scared of mounting, and lacking the confidence she needs to be successful. She is a good mare and will be just fine. A few weeks of confidence building, and this will be a different horse. #coltstarter #horsetrainer #horsemanship #ranchlife #wyoming

Texas rancher here: I’d trust you with any colt I own. You didn’t just make her rideable, you made her willing.

there is an earthly, soulful thing about watching a man and a horse coming to an understanding. I know we call it breaking, but I've always seen it as a building - of trust, willingness, love, and gentleness. There isn't much else like it.

So spot on. People don't realize how much a bad start can follow a horse for years patience and horsemanship make all the difference.
