The Arab slave trade lasted 13 centuries. Over 10 million Africans trafficked through the Sahara and the Indian Ocean before a single European slave ship ever left the West African coast. That trade built an ideology. And that ideology never died. They call it kafala. Gulf countries have used this sponsorship system since the 1950s to control migrant workers from the Global South. 24 million people are living under it right now. Over 750,000 of them are Ethiopian. These women come from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and Eritrea. They leave home looking for a better life. They arrive and find a cage. Passports taken. Phones confiscated. Abused by the very people who control whether they can legally exist in that country. And if they run? They get reported as having absconded. The victim becomes the criminal. Nearly 7,000 workers died building Qatar’s World Cup stadiums. The world showed up anyway and watched the game. In Lebanon 68 percent of migrant domestic workers report sexual harassment. When the government passed a sexual harassment law in 2020 they wrote domestic workers out of it on purpose. They know what is happening to these women. They just do not care. When war hit Lebanon in 2024 employers packed up and left workers locked inside homes while bombs were falling. One employer posted a Nigerian woman for sale on Facebook. Like she was furniture. Qatar and Saudi Arabia say they have reformed kafala. The abuse has not stopped. This is not a labor policy. It is the Arab slave trade with a new name. And it is happening right now to our people.
