@foragetotable: I wonder how many sunsets I’ve missed by being somewhere I thought I had to be. That thought found me at Moolack. The sun was already low when the entire western sky opened into color. The ocean wore it for a moment, every wave carrying a little piece of the horizon toward shore before breaking at my feet. There are roughly eight billion people alive tonight. Somebody is meeting the love of their life. Somebody is packing a suitcase. Somebody is hearing terrible news. Somebody is laughing so hard they can’t breathe. Somebody is staring at a ceiling, wondering how their life became this. And here, on this small stretch of the Oregon coast, the sun was setting as though none of us had ever made a mistake. I find that strangely comforting. The universe is enormous, spectacular, and almost offensively indifferent to our plans. Yet somehow, in all that immensity, we still find things with gravity. A coastline. A voice. A person. An idea of who we might become. Something that reaches across all the noise and pulls. I don’t think we choose all the things that change our direction. Sometimes you simply recognize the pull. Tonight I did. So I stayed until there was nothing left on the water but the memory of color. Tomorrow, the tide will erase where I stood. It can have the footprints.
