The Amex Platinum costs $895 a year. On its own that sounds like a lot for a credit card. But once you actually map out the credits, the math looks a lot different. Every month you get $15 for Uber (bumped to $20 in December), $25 toward streaming, and about $13 toward Walmart+. Every quarter you get $100 toward Resy and $75 toward lululemon. Twice a year there's a $300 hotel credit. And once a year you get $200 toward an airline fee, $120 for Uber One, $209 for CLEAR Plus, $200 toward an Oura Ring, and $300 toward Equinox or SoulCycle. Add all of that up and you're at just under $3,000 a year in credits. Subtract the $895 fee and you're still over $2,000 ahead, on paper. The word

Add all of that up and you're at just under $3,000 a year in credits. Subtract the $895 fee and you're still over $2,000 ahead, on paper. The word "on paper" is doing a lot of work there. Credits do not roll over. If you skip a quarter, that money is just gone, it doesn't stack or carry into the next one. This card only pays off if you actually use it like a system, not if it sits in your wallet. And that's before you even factor in the parts that don't have a dollar sign attached. Every purchase earns points you can transfer into airline miles or hotel points, sometimes at a bonus rate. A mex Offers stacks extra, personalized statement credits on top of everything else if you activate them in the app. And you're also getting lounge access through the Global Lounge Collection, Hilton and Marriott elite status, rental car status, and a full set of travel and purchase protections, trip delay coverage, baggage insurance, purchase protection, extended warranties, cell phone protection, none of which show up in the $3,000 number at all. So is it worth $895? If you'll actually use the credits every month and every quarter, yes, easily. If they're going to sit in an app you never open, you're just paying for a coupon book you never crack open.
