Follow Muffin the rescued lab beagle @Tammy’s BoxersAndBeagles Marshall BioResources breeds beagles, cats, and ferrets for use in biomedical research and vaccine development. Modern alternatives to using these animals now exist for this research. They include advanced organ-on-a-chip systems, 3D human tissue models, computer modeling and AI-driven simulations, and human cell-based assays that replicate human respiratory and immune responses far more accurately than animal models. These technologies eliminate species differences that often make animal data unreliable, especially for infectious disease research. In vaccine development and toxicity testing, microphysiological systems and high-throughput screening methods now offer faster, more ethical, and more human-relevant results, making the use of ferrets increasingly unnecessary and scientifically outdated. As animal lovers, if we knew somebody was breeding and killing animals for having minor defects or because they couldn’t afford vet care, it would be animal cruelty and likely lead to their arrest. But when Scott Marshall, CEO of Marshall BioResources, does the same thing on a massive scale—euthanizing animals for things like mismatched eyes or overcrowding—it’s protected by a USDA license and hidden behind the word “research.” The only difference is scale, and a system that excuses cruelty when it’s done behind locked gates. This system protects profit, not lives. But public pressure, whistleblowers, and protests have always led the way to change. Laws can change. Licenses can be revoked. Public support can shift. History is full of practices that were once accepted—until enough people said “no more.” I’m a volunteer with the nonprofit Beagle Lovers And Rescuers, the group behind ongoing investigations and public campaigns to expose Marshall BioResources. WXXI in NY covered our first protest in 2024. A few months later, our founder launched the nonprofit, and we returned to protest this past May in even greater numbers for a powerful three-day protest. It boosted awareness on social media with 100k+ views and still growing. We continue hearing from locals who never this place existed.
