Last week I spent some quality time in the Vesterheim Museum collections looking closely at old bowls. More is known about the painters of these bowls than the turners. Learning what I can about the historical and cultural context of bowl turning is of great interest to me. With support from the American Scandinavian Foundation through an Artist Fellowship I’ve been afforded the opportunity to learn more on this topic as it relates to Nordic countries. My trip was focused on looking closely at, and photographing, old wooden bowls. So much can be observed by handling these bowls, particularly as someone who has turned using almost exclusively pre-industrial methods for nearly 8 years. I also visited the museums library, which has a great selection of books that are rare/out of print relating to Nordic folk art and traditions that are of interest to me. I’m planning on doing a write-up of the visit and share some images and findings in the near future. Thank you to the Vesterheim Curatorial Department for all your help! Particularly in making some great publication selections relating to folk art and drinking traditions prior to my visit to the library. With the limited time I had to visit the library, I was able to gather a wealth of information to process on my own time. That wouldn’t have happened without the support and guidance of the curatorial team. 🙏 #woodturning #vesterheimmuseum #museumcollection #nordicfolkart #norskeantikviteter #norskfolkekunst #norwegianantiques #norwegianfolkart
