Well, it happened again. When I first started my service-based business, things took off quickly. Then… things dipped. But I knew I had proof of concept, so I didn’t panic. (Ok that’s not true. I totally panicked.) I suspected the slowdown was seasonal—and I was right. Here’s what I’ve learned about building a business in a small town: People have rhythms. Early summer? Vacation. The week after the Fourth? More vacation. Late July? Things started picking back up. Early August? We have a huge regional tourist event that basically changes the rhythm of the entire area for a couple of weeks. And now we’re into the second half of August. Some families are busy with county fair season… And my phone is blowing up with inquiries. I’ve gotten more inquiries and given more quotes in the last couple of days than I can keep up with. It feels remarkably similar to what happened when my business took off in the spring. So I’m taking two lessons from this: 1. Learn the seasonal and regional rhythms of your market. A slow period doesn’t automatically mean your business isn’t working. Sometimes people are simply doing other things. 2. Trust your gut. I had a feeling this would happen. Instead of assuming the business had failed when things slowed down, I paid attention to what I was seeing and waited to see what happened. And now? Well, it happened again.
