Rebecca Latimer Felton told a crowd of Georgia farmers she'd support a thousand lynchings a week to protect white women from Black men. In Wilmington, North Carolina, editor Alex Manly answered her with the truth about consent and hypocrisy in his newspaper The Daily Record, the only Black-owned daily in the country. White supremacist newspapers twisted his words into a rallying cry, and on November 10, 1898, an armed mob burned his press, killed dozens of Black residents, and overthrew Wilmington's elected government at gunpoint, the only successful coup in U.S. history. Twenty-four years later, Felton became the first woman in the U.S. Senate.
