@mamainmadrid: The news in Spain is all about how the education system has declined in the last few years, a lot of comments blaming screen use and parents. I’m not sure. What are your thoughts? We moved our kids for other reasons, but interesting seeing this all come out now. #livingabroad #lifeinmadrid #education

Went to an international school abroad and I loved it so much. I live in the US now but want to send them to an international school here because my experience was so lovely.

After two years we took our boys from the public school to a private British school here in Alicante. They will graduate with a double diploma. It was the right choice for us 🥰

Regarding the caption, I can say that the blame is definitely on screen use in many cases. I am an English teacher in a public high school in Spain and we can only do so much with the hours that we have, the rest is on them. When you give out homework or any project and turns out most of them used AI to complete it, you're just wasting everyone's time. Attention spans and motivation is really declining: what's the use of learning a language if there will be AI in the future? They truly do not have any critical skills and it's concerning. Literacy rates are also dropping everywhere because kids NEED to read at home and create a habit. On the other hand, the thing with the PISA report is this: not only Spain's results have dropped, it is a trend that most countries get worse results each passing year. Is it really a fault of our own system or a worldwide problem?

in regards to the caption, the problem hasn't just been happening in education scores, children are having issues with their attention spans, this is very directly linked to screen usage and acting like it's not is setting your child up for failure

Language teacher here. It's always hard to know which choice is the correct one. Genuine question: If living in Spain is permanent, how will you continue to improve their Spanish literacy and academic vocabulary? If you don't supplement/support their Spanish (tutoring, etc), they could get behind their Spanish peers. This is something to consider especially if they may attend a Spanish Uni. Making sure they are professionally/academically fluent in two languages would be challenging, but not impossible! They will have gaps in both languages, but that ok!

Same situation here; me being the only Spanish-speaking around my kids in a small town in MA…unfortunately I don’t have a school nearby where they only speak Spanish, but happy for your kids!

Have you researched TCK - third culture kids? Good knowledge to have. I moved my child to an American school as well in madrid. It’s a closer curriculum to Canada and if going to North America for uni, it’s a good choice.

My kids went to public, then a concertado and now a British school. The quality of teachers here in Spain as well as the US has declined so much… so many people who should not be teachers. There is a lot of brainwashing happening now.
