In 1986, the Brunei government seized the National Bank of Brunei (which was 98% controlled by the Khoo family) after discovering that 90% of the bank's loans (approx. $300 million) had been siphoned as undocumented, low-interest funds to Khoo's private companies. Khoo's eldest son, Khoo Ban Hock, was arrested and jailed. Khoo Teck Puat himself fled and became a fugitive from Brunei's criminal fraud charges.
