“AN ACT OF PURE EVIL.” A Charleston, West Virginia man has been sentenced for the 2020 murders of his mother, stepfather, and younger brothers. HIs motivation? His girlfriend. In December 2020, 39-year-old Risa Mae Saunders, 37-year-old Daniel Dale Long, and their sons, 12-year-old Gage Ripley and 3-year-old Jameson Long, were gunned down by Saunders' son, 16-year-old Gavin Smith. Smith committed the murders while on a video call with his girlfriend, 17-year-old Rebecca Walker. Walker later admitted to egging him on and stated that he committed the murders in order for them to be together. Smith and Walker were both arrested. Smith was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, while Walker was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. In 2021, Walker accepted a plea deal and was given 10 years in prison with the possibility of parole. In 2022, Smith was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. However, in 2025, his sentence was overturned. This was due to the circuit court improperly informing the jury that if it convicted him of first-degree murder, Smith would be parole eligible after 15 years. This information can lead to prejudice against a defendant. In June 2026, Smith accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to his murder charges.
