@sacredchad: The Chapel of the Ascension stands on the summit of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, on the spot where Christian tradition holds that Jesus Christ ascended into heaven forty days after His Resurrection. The event is recorded in Acts 1:9-12. After Jesus was lifted up and a cloud took Him out of their sight, two men in white robes appeared to the Apostles and said: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.” The Apostles then returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet. The Frankish pilgrim Arculf, visiting in the year 680, described seeing “the footprints of Christ, plainly and clearly impressed in the dust” inside a railing at the center of the church. Inside the small octagonal chapel, a slab of stone is venerated as bearing the right footprint of Christ. The section bearing the left footprint was removed during the Middle Ages and placed behind the pulpit in the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. The Chapel of the Ascension remains under the Waqf today, but Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, and Coptic Orthodox Christians are each permitted to celebrate the Liturgy inside on their respective feast days of the Ascension. Christians have venerated this site continuously for over 1,640 years. #jesus #History #ascension
