They can — and one of the most fascinating ways they do it is through pheromones: chemical signals released by an animal that can influence or convey information to other members of the same species. Unlike vocal calls or body movements, pheromonal communication can persist in the environment, allowing information to remain detectable even after the animal that released it has moved away.
