@gen.e_media: This company is turning landfills back into landscapes Zigma Global clears landfill waste and reclaims old dump yards in India using a scientific process called bio-mining. Government estimates that there are 2,424 dump yard sites in India, holding close to 16 crore tonnes of legacy waste across roughly 15,000 acres. Most of it is land that sits on the city and surrounded by neighbourhoods. The old fix was capping which was to cover the mound with soil. It’s cheaper, but the waste underneath keeps producing methane and leachate, and the land stays dead. Zigma has collaborated with Singapore headquartered waste management corporation Blue Planet Environmental Solutions. Waste is excavated and processed to separate materials such as recyclables, organic matter, inert material and Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF). The RDF can then be used as an alternative fuel in industries such as cement manufacturing, where suitable facilities are equipped to use it. The other fractions have their own routes. Recovered soil goes into landscaping and levelling low-lying land and recyclables re-enter the material stream. What’s left at the end is land. Sites that sat for decades leaching into groundwater, catching fire in summer, emitting methane now becomes an open ground that cities can actually use again.
