more than comrades ☭‍ᥫ᭡ | Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were German philosophers, economists, and revolutionary socialists who became the founders of scientific socialism and the principal developers of Marxism. Their ideas profoundly influenced the international workers’ movement and continue to shape socialist thought today. Marx and Engels first met personally in 1844 and quickly developed a remarkably close friendship. They discovered that they shared fundamental views about history, capitalism, and the struggle of the working class. From then on, they worked together not only as political comrades but also as close personal friends. Their relationship was based on constant intellectual exchange. They discussed philosophy, economics, politics, and revolutionary strategy, often challenging and improving each other’s ideas. Together they wrote important works such as The Holy Family, The German Ideology, and, most famously, The Communist Manifesto. Their friendship was also deeply personal. Through their extensive correspondence, they discussed their families, personal problems, health, financial difficulties, and everyday life. Engels supported Marx financially for many years, helping him and his family survive periods of extreme poverty. This support allowed Marx to dedicate himself to his research, particularly his study of capitalism that eventually became Capital. Engels was not simply Marx’s assistant. He was a revolutionary thinker in his own right and made important contributions to Marxist theory. Nevertheless, he consistently regarded Marx as his closest intellectual comrade and continued to defend and develop their shared theoretical work. After Marx died in 1883, Engels devoted much of the rest of his life to preserving Marx’s intellectual legacy. He organized Marx’s manuscripts and prepared the second and third volumes of Capital for publication. The friendship between Marx and Engels was therefore much more than a professional collaboration.
