Um, I don’t agree with letting the characters take over. Writers should have control, otherwise you’re just improvising, not building.

I'm occasionally going back to the start of my fanfic and noticing how much I've improved. I can't wait to go back and edit the whole thing but I already let my characters run riot 🤣 plus there is a secret that is going to be dropped in a later part that I know is going to kill readers

I'm of half a mind to pay an editor to read my fic(s) just so they can tell me whether I should actually be writing a novel or if I'm delusional. 🙄 I do all of those things (I THINK), but I doubt I'll believe I'm worthy until I'm demanding green m&ms on the set of my movie adaptation.

making a reader think "dang" is one of my favorite things.. but Ive also learned theres different kinds of secrets and different things I love adding. 1. the reader knows something the characters dont. 2. the characters know something the readers dont. 3. is it a red herring or relevant? 4. does a reread of the book make it even better. I love a reread and catching all the different details the author left. So even a mystery where you dont know the villain til the end a reread shows you things you might have missed or things not seeming that relevant at the time.

My characters totally took over. Their direction in taking over my plots are better too. I feel my work as a medium helps me with getting into the voice of the character. My pacing needs work for sure though.
