@doctor.painkiller: Yes, that's a catheter. Yes, it's in the nose. Yes, it can stop a migraine. This is an SPG block — a sphenopalatine ganglion block. The SPG is a bundle of nerves that sits just behind your nasal cavity and plays a big role in migraine and cluster headache pain. By delivering numbing medication through a thin, soft catheter in the nose, we can quiet that nerve bundle down — sometimes breaking a migraine cycle in minutes. No needles through the skin, no sedation, and most patients say the weirdest part is the anticipation. It doesn't work for everyone, and how long relief lasts varies from person to person — but for the right patient, it can be a useful tool that too few people know exists. If you get migraine attacks and nothing's working, ask your doctor whether an SPG block makes sense for you. I'm a neurologist and pain specialist — follow for more on treatments your 7-minute appointment never had time to cover. #migraine #migrainerelief #doctor

I had 4 of these and they did nothing sadly. An occipital nerve block worked though! (Ended a 3-week status migraine)

Dr. Sader, at what point is it a good idea to see a neurologist for migraine treatment/management as opposed to a PCP?

I just drooled over a treatment! had it in the city once for my cluster headache, and it was bliss. I had a break for an entire week. I am currently on day 487 of 4 cycles a day, and ready to put my head through a window

So quick question… is this procedure only successful if done with a catheter? Because we used to do this just with regular syringes up the nose and then we were supposed to just give a sniff but it didn’t work that well. I’m wondering if it just didn’t go up far enough to reach to the right spot.

It took over forty years of weekly migraines for a doctor to even offer me a sample medication (Nurtec) rather than just tell me to take Tylenol (which does absolutely nothing). I can’t even imagine a doctor taking this kind of time with me.
