There ARE laws in place that support good animal husbandry. I've been telling people that animal cruelty is less of an industry problem and more of a boycott problem. The fact of the matter is, even if you take feeling and morality out of it, abused and starved animals just don't make good products.

The definition for a "family farm" according to the USDA is "family farm is any farm in which the majority of the business is owned by an operator and any individuals related to them by blood, marriage, or adoption, including relatives who do not live in the operator’s household" Tyson themselves contracts "family farms" which allows them to dictate much of the farming practices and going off USDA "family farm" criteria most of Tyson's meat production would have gone under "Family farm". Most farms people would deem "factory farms" would fall under the 50% ownership criteria per the guidelines stating it is not size but ownership, while exhibiting the exploitative practices involved in mass animal industrial farming

The horrendous part is that the packing plants have a monopoly and it making it harder for the smaller farms to get their animals in. Hence making meat more expensive.

Outranked but the output is only 22% it beef. A lot of beef farms doesn’t Chang the fact that 80% of beef is coming from large corporate farms. There’s a lot of family farms but most animals will in torture at the expense of corporate farms

I don’t have the guts to be a meat farmer, which is weird, I grew up witnessing my family butchering chickens for dinner. But I still love me a good steak and grilled chicken, so thank you farmers!🥰

the distinction for animal rights activists isnt “what farms are family owned vs corporate owned.” its more of the environmental costs, the owning of animals as chattel to extract their resources, the inevitable slaughter that will happen often as low as 1/10 of their total lifespan, the inhumane conditions because “family owned” tells you nothing about how animals are treated. another interesting stat: according to the Sentience Institutes analysis of USDA censusdata using EPA CAFO definitions putting the share of animals living in factory farm conditions was 99.9% of chickens, 98.3% of egg hens, 98.6% of pigs, 99.8% of turkeys, 76% of cattle, and 100% of fish (which are killed in the trillions). although one caveat is that the fish data is more of an estimate since the CAFO definition excludes aquatic animals. your stats are accurate, but yoir conclusion and response to the commenter is a bit misleading

And personally I have a distinction between farms (good animal care and humanely processed animal products) and industries (bad animal care purely for profit and inhumane treatment of animals)

My papa owned West Coast cattle company in Tennessee and he provided almost a quarter of the beef for the state of Tennessee. It was a family owned ranch and we watched it last year cause we couldn’t pay for it anymore.

Could you share information on finding meat raised on farms like yours in grocery stores? We've been buying "pasture raised" meat, and buying from the local butcher but it is so, so expensive and I'm wondering how I can figure out if the stuff sold in stores meets my qualifications
