*1. NIGERIA BECOMES FIRST OPEC MEMBER TO JOIN INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY AS ASSOCIATE MEMBER* Nigeria has made history as the first OPEC member country to be admitted as an Associate Member of the International Energy Agency, IEA. The move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s push to position Nigeria as a key player in global energy transition, data sharing, and investment attraction. As an Associate Member, Nigeria will gain access to IEA’s energy data, policy recommendations, and technical support on energy security, renewables, and efficiency. This is expected to help Nigeria balance its role as a major oil producer with plans for cleaner energy and gas development. Energy analysts say the membership will boost investor confidence and strengthen Nigeria’s voice in global energy discussions. The IEA, based in Paris, includes major energy-consuming nations and provides critical outlooks that shape energy markets worldwide. *2. PRESIDENT TINUBU BREAKS 46-YEAR AJAOKUTA STEEL DEADLOCK AS NNPCL SIGNS 20-YEAR GAS SUPPLY DEAL* President Bola Tinubu has recorded a major win with the signing of a 20-year gas supply agreement by the NNPCL, aimed at reviving the moribund Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited. The Ajaokuta Steel Plant, conceived over 46 years ago, has remained largely incomplete due to funding, infrastructure, and gas supply challenges. With this new deal, NNPCL will supply natural gas to power the plant’s operations. Government officials say this is the single biggest step yet toward making Ajaokuta operational. The revival is projected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported steel, save foreign exchange, and drive industrialization. It also aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda of building modern infrastructure and sustainable development. Stakeholders in the steel and manufacturing sectors have described the deal as “long overdue” and a turning point for Nigeria’s industrial base. *3. FG MOVES TO ADOPT 112 AS NIGERIA’S SINGLE NATIONWIDE EMERGENCY NUMBER* The Federal Government has announced plans to adopt *112* as Nigeria’s single nationwide emergency number. Once fully rolled out, Nigerians will be able to dial 112 to reach police, fire service, ambulance, and other emergency responders from any network, anywhere in the country. The initiative is modeled after the 911 system in the US and 999 in the UK. The FG says the goal is to improve response time, coordination among agencies, and citizen safety. The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, in collaboration with security agencies, will lead the implementation. Public awareness campaigns are expected to follow to educate citizens on the new number. This is part of broader security and public safety reforms under the Tinubu administration. *4. NIGERIAN EQUITIES EMERGE AS WORLD’S BEST-PERFORMING STOCK MARKET IN DOLLAR TERMS, OVERTAKE SOUTH KOREA* The Nigerian equities market has emerged as the best-performing stock market in the world in dollar terms for the period, overtaking South Korea. The Nigerian Exchange, NGX, has benefited from reforms in the FX market, renewed investor confidence, corporate earnings, and inflows into banking, oil & gas, and consumer stocks. Market analysts attribute the rally to President Tinubu’s economic policies, improved transparency, and Nigeria’s attractive valuations compared to other emerging markets. The performance is expected to attract more Foreign Portfolio Investors and deepen Nigeria’s capital market. For everyday Nigerians, a strong stock market often signals economic optimism and more opportunities for investment and wealth creation.
