The U.S. is already facing serious shortages of key missile-defense interceptors after months of heavy use in the Iran war. Some analysts warn that American stocks of systems such as Patriot, THAAD, SM-3 and SM-6 could be dangerously depleted in a major conflict. Now imagine facing China—with its enormous arsenal of ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Could America’s existing missile-defense systems withstand a sustained Chinese missile barrage? Or would the shortage of interceptors become one of Washington’s biggest vulnerabilities in a war with Beijing? That is a question the Pentagon may not be able to ignore anymore though.
