The history of the engine began long before cars, trains, or the Industrial Revolution. Almost 2,000 years ago, Hero of Alexandria described the aeolipile, a device where heated water produced steam that made a metal sphere spin. Humanity had already discovered that heat could be turned into motion, but it would take centuries before this idea changed the world. By the 17th and 18th centuries, steam engines were becoming practical machines. Steam pressure could move a piston and produce mechanical work. Engines pumped water from mines, powered factories, moved ships and eventually carried trains across entire countries. Then came the internal combustion engine. Fuel burned directly inside a cylinder, expanding gases pushed a piston, and the crankshaft converted that motion into rotation, repeating the cycle thousands of times every minute. In just a few centuries, engines replaced much of the work once dependent on human and animal muscle, wind and flowing water. They transformed transportation, manufacturing, agriculture and eventually aviation. From Hero’s spinning sphere to steam engines, combustion engines, turbines and electric motors, the principle kept evolving: converting energy into controlled motion. And that simple idea helped reshape almost the entire human world. #Engine #Engineering #edit #Technology #History
