@kodekloud: How WhatsApp Moves 100 Billion Messages a Day 📱 Your phone keeps one persistent TCP connection open to a chat server. Each server runs Erlang on FreeBSD and holds about 2 million connections, and a routing table maps every user to a server so your message hops from server to server and drops onto your friend's phone. Nothing stays stored once it's delivered. No cloud backup means a deleted chat is gone for good. Fair design, or a dealbreaker? I'm not convinced that all this information is stored in memory. Are you saying that the offline tier is in memory? This is not likely because there might be millions of messages containing images and video. It's more likely that this router is on disk. I'm also not convinced that even the routing table is in memory

Thanks for another video explaining how the real system works! It really broadens my horizons - I love your videos. Could you please talk about how Telegram works, if possible? After all, it’s open-source, and their infrastructure is more or less known.

what about group chats? if there’s 20 people, the msg goes to each server as well?

WhatsApp does a pretty bad job with offline messages, if it’s a photo that you don’t pick up soon, it doesn’t download it for some reason!
