All in all, there are over 20 million people of Polish descent living outside Poland, and only a portion of this figure stems from migration during the 1990s and 2000s. Some are descendants of people exiled to Siberia by Stalin, others ended up in foreign countries due to the upheavals of war and simply stayed there, while some fled the Stalinist regime. There are also descendants of those who escaped Tsarist repression during the Partitions. And, of course, there were earlier waves of migration driven by poverty. Some have long since forgotten Poland and now identify more with the nations where they live—having simply assimilated—but others have preserved Polish culture, language, and identity (this applies particularly to Poles born in Kazakhstan who are descendants of Siberian exiles), and I consider them to be 100% Polish.
