@tootall2function: Slowing down and actually taking the time to teach him the skills to take care of himself and his home is something that I should’ve done long ago. It’s been really hard because there’s so much to get done and I’ve been so busy that I haven’t really had the time to teach him. My new focus is going to be teaching a new skill every single week. He felt so proud of himself after feeding his cats for the first time successfully. He usually tries when I’m not there and ends up dumping an entire can of wet food on the ground. I think this is gonna make him feel much more independent 🥹 #dementiaawareness #seniorcare #volunteer #caregiver #fyp
Caitlin, I don't know what to say except you are an angel on earth. If every senior in this world had someone like you then the world would be a better place. You are basically parenting. It's a tough job with little appreciation.

You are "fostering his independence". That is good! That is a great goal. Reinforce daily. He is like our intellectually and developmentally disabled, we do that. Add new goals after you think he has mastered it. This helps him feel less dependent and more in charge of his life!

Great job getting him to help feed the cats! Thats a job I bet he will enjoy too. Can i recommend an elevated feeding station? My cats make way less mess with it and I dont have to bend as far! The stainless steel bowls can be removed to clean & refill at a comfortable height. Also, you can get a double or singles (if one is a food thief its good to feed them facing away from each other lol)

It might help him if you take a photo of the food on the dishes the way you want it then stick the picture above the place where it goes. Also could the dishes go on top of a short stool or an old box so he doesn't have to bend down too much?

Can Mr Chris connect the doorbell to a light switch so the lights flash when the doorbell is pressed? I saw that in a movie once

As an autistic mom I can 100% relate!!! Because I’m that way with my son ( just doing things for him to hurry it along because life is busy)

Does he have an airfryer? Airfryers are safer than microwaves. Please look at visual schedules and picture recipes.
