@c5news: “He was sitting shotgun eating my lunch!” Bears are getting into more trouble than usual in the Rocky Mountains this summer, getting trapped in cars, raiding dustbins and sometimes attacking people. Widespread drought has hit their natural food supply - so they're being forced into more urban areas to hunt for grub. Colorado in the United States is especially experiencing a record amount of bear activity. Patrick Sullivan woke up at 3.00am in July to feed his baby son when he heard a car horn honking continuously outside, assuming it was a "crazy neighbour". To his dismay, a large black bear had opened the door to his family’s Toyota SUV and trapped itself inside. Andy Kerrigan, from Steamboat Springs, was also startled in June when he discovered a small black bear in the front seat of his car, apparently eating his lunch. He resorted to using a long wooden plank to chase the bear cub off. In another video from August, a black bear naughtily sneaks into a Colorado Fire Department and leaves holding a bag in its mouth. Wildlife officer Travis Sauder from Colorado Parks and Wildlife said: “Right now is probably the most critical time, really now into mid-October. “The bears are in what we call hyperphagia and that is their last real push to put on calories. They're eating up to 20,000 calories a day to get ready for hibernation."
