My fellow Namibians, after picking up Silas this morning, our first stop was the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security. I am pleased to inform the Nation that Silas Shatika is NOT legally recorded as dead. He is ALIVE on the official system. We then immediately started rebuilding the most basic things that many of us take for granted. Silas did not have identification documents in his possession, so I assisted him with the process of renewing his ID, and today he walked out with his ID slip. But I could not simply leave him there. I took Silas to buy new clothes and shoes, and thereafter booked him into a Guesthouse where he can take a HOT SHOWER, have a proper meal, rest and sleep in a BED tonight with dignity. Sometimes helping another human being does not require millions. Sometimes it simply requires us to LOOK AT ANOTHER PERSON and remember that they, too, are somebody’s son, brother, father or friend. Whatever circumstances brought Silas to the streets, he remains a HUMAN BEING and a fellow Namibian deserving of dignity. Thereafter, we proceeded to the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs to begin verifying another important part of his story. Silas maintains that he previously served as a Soldier in the Namibia Defence Force and that he was stationed at Mpacha Military Base in Katima Mulilo. We have submitted the necessary information and are now AWAITING OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION OF HIS EMPLOYMENT AND MILITARY SERVICE. If his service is confirmed, we will proceed to investigate the remaining claims surrounding his circumstances and establish exactly what happened to this man. This journey is no longer simply about determining whether Silas was recorded as dead. IT IS ABOUT RESTORING A MAN’S IDENTITY, DIGNITY AND HOPE. Tomorrow, WE CONTINUE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH.
