Follow me Icebergs of East Greenland The Icebergs of East Greenland are among the largest and most spectacular natural wonders in the Arctic. They are formed when enormous glaciers, such as Helheim Glacier and other outlet glaciers of the Greenland Ice Sheet, break apart in a process called calving. These massive blocks of freshwater ice then drift through the fjords and into the Greenland Sea. East Greenland is famous for its breathtaking fjords, especially Sermilik Fjord and Scoresby Sund, where thousands of giant icebergs float through crystal-clear Arctic waters. Some of these icebergs are as tall as a 15-story building, although only about 10% of an iceberg is visible above the water, with the remaining 90% hidden below the surface. The ice that forms these icebergs originally fell as snow thousands of years ago. Over time, the snow was compressed into solid glacier ice before eventually breaking away into the sea. As the icebergs drift south along Greenland’s east coast, they gradually melt and often change shape, creating unique natural sculptures in shades of white and deep blue. During the summer months, East Greenland offers excellent opportunities for boat tours, kayaking, photography, and wildlife watching. Visitors can often see whales, seals, and seabirds alongside the drifting icebergs, making the region one of the most extraordinary Arctic destinations in the world. Quick Facts * Location: East Greenland, Arctic Ocean * Formed by: Glaciers calving into the sea * Best time to visit: June–October * Famous fjords: Sermilik Fjord and Scoresby Sund * Interesting fact: About 90% of every iceberg remains underwater, making them much larger than they appear. #iceberg #greenland
