@officiallyrasheem: Being in college for four years does not automatically mean you’re graduating in four years. Your degree has a roadmap. You should know what you’ve completed, what you’re taking now, and what’s still standing between you and graduation. For a typical 120-credit bachelor’s degree, averaging 15 credits each semester gets you to 120 in four years. But here’s the catch: they have to be the RIGHT credits. Meet with your advisor. Check your transcript. Learn how to read your degree audit. Know your major’s requirements and four-year plan. Your advisor should help guide you, but you should understand your own path to graduation. Don’t wait until senior year to discover you’re missing something. #CollegeSuccess #CollegeStudents #AcademicAdvising #StudentSuccess

A lot of first generation college students don’t understand this and don’t have a parent/mentor to push them and stay on the right path. I’ve taken so many classes that don’t apply to my degree that I’m embarrassed

I think it’s also possible that the student might be thinking from the standpoint of what classes do they need to graduate, not the number of credits. Especially as students get into their higher level courses for their major, they might be checking off those course requirements without thinking of the credit amount. But it depends on what student you’re speaking with.

It should be specialized classes only… makes a better impact… example I knocked out my GE classes at community but focused on core classes at a university… GE is a waste of valuable resources. It’s a money grab. Masters and PhD only focus on core classes-

I never knew how many credits I needed because I keep changing my goals as I learned more. I started wanting a Mathematics degree. I graduated with Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Philosophy degree. Took me 5 years. I also had a handful of graduate courses as well. But, yes, I always knew what I was doing.
