@laborhoodbestie: It’s the audacity for me!!!!! As a patient, ESPICALLY one in labor, there is SO MUCH out of your control. I agree with you 100%! Watch out girl, that Dr. is going to come for you next. She always does this. I blocked her a while ago.

I agree with her. I really like Dr. Clark but I really heavily disagree with her take on this. I thought Sarah did a great job disclosing that they were her experiences and she wasn't saying they were best nor the recommended for others.

that OBGYN is problematic on so many levels. it's really upsetting that she has such a big platform and so many people listen to her!

I went to maternal fetal medicine yesterday an it was my first visit, I’m 29 weeks with twins. And half way through my ultrasound I looked at the techs badge and she was a student. I didn’t consent to a student doing my FIRST scan. I’m okay with students but why wasn’t I given a choice? We should ALL have a choice.

She doesn’t like the video because it gives women permission to say no when she personally doesn’t think they should be empowered to say so.

I was kicked out of plenty of rooms as a med student and even as a resident. Patients deserve to have the choice to have whoever is in their room! -Signed, an OB/Gyn

I hear what you’re saying and initially I went to her video and I was upset because I thought she was advocating just for patients to allow students in the room. But I rewatch the video a couple times and I realize all she is saying is that there’s already hesitation from mothers to have students in the room, especially because it’s such a vulnerable time. I think and correct me if I’m wrong, what she was saying is that it carries more weight coming from a medical professional when you say to not allow student students in the room. It’s already hard to get students access to witness births in general. At least that was my take on it. I will admit I was pissed initially because I thought she was attacking the nurse for her choice, but I think it was specifically about her putting that on the Internet.

I’m an NP now, who is getting ready to have twins and I plan on denying a CRNA student to do my epidural. While I understand this is how we learn, and I can’t say that it didn’t hurt my feelings when patients denied me an opportunity to practice a procedure when I was in clinicals, but I am a patient this time and will advocate for myself any way I want to.

As someone who allowed a student with my first labor and had a terrible experience, I declined it this time around. I’ve notified my hospital prior to my induction, they can watch and observe but I do not want them participating.

I unfollowed her. I am about to have a baby and I said I don’t want students working on me because I had a bad experience in the past. That’s my choice. She said “don’t go to a teaching hospital then”. Umm… we have one hospital and it’s MY body. Body autonomy matters. Consent matters. As a medical professional, she should respect that.

I just don’t get why she felt the need to make a video. Ok to have an opinion but like why create drama unnecessarily. Not a good look for her

Your explanation is perfect!!! She was so out of line. She was angry because a nurse spread the word that patients can make their own decisions on who can and cannot attend their births and assist in their care. That is CRAZY.

I’m a L&D nurse, I’m happy to take students with me day to day. When I had my 3rd baby 5 months ago, I specifically asked for no students. It’s MY birth and my preference. I didn’t think twice about it! Her take is NOT it.

I was on antepartum for a few weeks. Had students daily. I even let them do stuff that wasn’t necessary. Oh it’s your last day on clinical and you never got to do a cervical check? I gotta cervix if want 🤷🏻♀️my line is looking a little crusty if you wanna give it a go. Everyone gotta learn. That would have meant the world to me. HOWEVER. I did not want my emergency C-section with a micropreemie to be a student experience. It was the worst moments of life. Finding out the students I refused were allowed to watch from a window in the OR door was so violating. And I genuinely saw red when I found out they were there when my baby was being resuscitated. I didn’t even get to SEE my baby before he was taken away. I don’t even know he was born yet. My husband wasn’t allowed in the room while he was resuscitated because no one “unnecessary” could be let it. BUT STUDENTS WERE. I still feel just so violated thinking about them watching without me knowing and then the worst day of my life being their “cool” story at their post clinical conference. I did plan to allow students in postpartum and then decided not to.

pt have the right to KNOW they can refuse students. It would make them feel more confident to ask for no students. Its an example for our patients they can advocate for this if they see us doing it.

Giving birth is such a vulnerable moment, you’re literally half naked and having people look at your private parts. The less people that have to look at them the better.
