@litemindedtherapy: I think there can also be a quiet test underneath the experience of feeling unseen: If someone really cared about me, they would notice without me having to say anything. They would hear the change in my voice, ask the right follow-up question, or somehow know that “I’m fine” does not actually mean I’m fine. And to be honest.. that longing makes sense, especially if you have spent years noticing those things for everyone else! But it can also leave you waiting for people to find parts of you that you have become incredibly good at concealing, while every missed cue starts to feel like proof that they do not care as deeply as you do. Learning to be seen can feel surprisingly awkward because it often means interrupting the role you are used to playing. It might mean not immediately turning the conversation back to them, admitting, “I’m actually having a harder time than I’m letting on,” or asking someone to stay with what you shared instead of quickly making it smaller. And yes, part of this is choosing people who genuinely want to know you and make room for you. But part of it is also letting yourself take up that room before someone has perfectly invited you into it. Looking to start therapy in NYC? We are accepting new clients virtually and in person. Yuppp!! I've befriended so many people who have no curiosity about others. Some even act all condescending when I finally learnt to bring stuff up myself. So now I'm just by myself most of the time🥲

So like when I ask my girl about her day and am genuinely interested in everything she says, is it wrong of me to hope that she asks the same thing out of courtesy, or should I just talk about my day without having to be asked? She rarely ever asks and i’ve brought this up before, and she says that she wishes I would just say it most of the time

I often say our weakness are our strengths with the volume turned up too loud or showing up in inappropriate places! This really resonates, thanks for sharing :)

It’s like I’ve forgotten who I am/what I need because I’m so worried about protecting everyone else’s emotions all the time 😅
