Marie was groomed and raped and impregnated by Teddy when she was 14 and then was trapped trapped in constant survival mode and severe isolation so her emotional growth was like stopped and she was physically an adult but mentally still a terrified child trapped in a scary environment. also teddy was revered as the town’s golden boy meaning Marie had absolutely no support system the town and the system repeatedly failed to protect her which made it impossible for her to speak out or leave without facing consequences

(also some people are so hypocritical..."zhe compares joey to twddy!" yeah, because TWO DECADES of rape and abuse, her teenage life ripped away, her son who looks 99% like him, does drugs, violent at times, got a girl pregnant? is that not gonna remind her?) People only like a character and call them complex if their in the core 10, which shows their level of understanding books isnt that high as it shouldnt need to be laid out word for word. Ive seen someone say "she could've left" and someone called her a bird..I hope their aware there are LOADS of Marie lynchs out here. I dont even like the Marie murphy vs lynch. shes the same girl, its infact rubbing it in that Teddy took HERSELF away from her if that makes sense.

people have to understand that Marie was FORCED TO BE A MOTHER that's why she was such a bad mother, she kept having kids even though she didn't want to (Teddy decided for her) she never grew up mentally and just stayed with the 14 year old mindset. And that was all because of how much trauma she had and how much Teddy manipulated her into thinking that she's nothing without him, i will always be a marie defender.

Lots of you are proving my point, she IS the most complex character in the whole series. And lots of people are trying to say i’m defending her for actions, No i’m not and i never will but i do understand her she is frightened and vulnerable from TWO. DECADES. 2. DECADES of rape and abuse her head is completely fucked from manipulation and all the abuse and she is MENTALLY STUCK at that vulnerable 14 year old girl. She was FORCED to be a mother and was constantly having babies and miscarriages, she would get beat when the babies cried and r*ped after. SHE IS ILL AND TRAUMATISED… what don’t people understand about that? If you went through TWO WHOLE DECADES. 24. YEARS of rape and abuse you would be so ill in the head, she was underdeveloped in her brain and her body. You people need to understand she went through years of abuse and it is expected for her to be a horrible mother, And no this isn’t me defending marie because my HEART ACHES for her babies and IM SO GLAD they got away and are living happily now but i UNDERSTAND marie.

As someone who’s seen relationships like hers and teddy’s in real life, she’s not a villain she’s a victim through and through. Did her kids deserve that life, No but it’s not as simple as leaving. She’d had no support system, no resources and was constantly abused from 14! She was a baby when she became a mother and her whole brain was rewired from the abuse. Not to mention the back to back pregnancies and miscarriages she’d experienced. She needed help! So easy to judge when you haven’t experienced this situation in real life.
