Can you please explain that as an electron is a excitation in a, I think, a 3 dimensional field & is "pointlike" meaning is occupies no space then what is being fired at the proton to bounce off of its internal structure? To visualise these experiments the diagrams show electrons as little balls, protons a bigger little balls with 3 smaller balls inside them being the quarks. The quakes, which I think an electron also is, again are pointlike quantum objects I think. Is the little balls just some useful concept that in reality just don't exist? I'm very interested to know how physicists like you think about this.

The thing that constantly amaze me is how scientists are able filter out all the irrelevant things to find the actual things they're looking for. These high energy events are so quick, so rare and depends on so many variables that it's baffling that you can sort out the chaff to get to the actual important things. All you really have is thousands (or billions) of sensor readings.
