To be expected home is to know that your life has entered the rhythm of another person’s heart. Your footsteps are known. The sound of your car at the gate means something. Your empty chair alters the room. There are men who return to beautiful houses where no one listens for the door. Men whose absence causes no interruption, whose lateness alarms nobody, whose arrival is met only by silence. They may possess many things and still lack that small, holy assurance: Someone was waiting for me. So do not despise the calls asking when you will be home. Do not become irritated by the child who refuses to sleep before seeing you, the woman who keeps your food warm, the parent who asks you to send a message when you arrive safely. These are not interruptions. They are evidence that somewhere upon this vast earth, your life is woven into other lives. A man may travel far, sit at important tables and be welcomed in many rooms. But there is a tenderness unlike any other in opening one familiar door and hearing someone say: You are finally home. Wealth can purchase a house. It cannot purchase the blessing of being awaited.
