I’m not sure ppl are so fixated on Elizabeth Holmes as much as they are with the idea of Elizabeth Holmes under Nathan Fielder’s kaleidoscopic lens. like, if this was just another Holmes documentary, I doubt it would be perking up anybody’s ears

It’s all about the desire for the American Dream we’re all indoctrinated with. Scammers in a lot of ways are an embodiment of that desire, they’re willing to strive for the goal to the point of absurdity. I think about The Great Gatsby and how Gatsby remains a beloved character despite (at least in my eyes) being a generally terrible person.

The podcast The Opportunist *used to* do an amazing job exploring the nuance of there not necessarily being “good” and “bad” people, just normal people who see an opportunity to get ahead and take it and then end up scamming. Which I appreciate because I know a lot of people think “I would never do something like that because I’m a good person!” but little lies can compound quickly and it’s a good reminder to be scrupulous even in small things. It was super fascinating. (*It got sold a few years ago and it’s horrible now.)

I’m fascinated as a long term fan of Nathan Fielder, this type of serious documentary is so different than his past projects as someone who has watched everything he has put out. I think he can bring a special type of lens for us to view her story/side through humorous investigation. Idk, but I’m SAT

For me, it was fascinating that Elizabeth Holmes was able to get away with what she did for how long. Like from listening to the dropout podcast when it first came out, I was flabbergasted no one caught on or did anything sooner.

Fictitious capital is built on expectations of future value. Investors put money into what something will become, and Elizabeth Holmes, Sam Bankman-Fried and the AI bubble all show how easily speculation turns into hype, hype into valuation, and valuation into something that looks like real wealth. They just pushed that logic far enough to become fraud. The weird part is that Americans treat this kind of speculation as normal right up until the story falls apart.

I would argue the American dream is to be able to scam your way to the top . And to step on others. I think the fascination with these kinds of people reach a huge culmination when trump was running for president and then won

I think that for her story, the healthcare piece is very pertinent. I personally think she wouldn’t be in as much trouble if she scammed rich people and didn’t hurt everyday people. Average people were hurt by the failure of her product and they were actively rolling them out in stores.
