I agree with this, but I also don’t love it when people see my career as a stepping stone. Teacher turn over is difficult for kids and schools and communities. Having people who are going to stay in the schools and help build community ties are necessary. Also, presenting it as a stepping stone to higher paying careers reinforces the idea that we don’t deserve to get paid more because it “isn’t a real career.” Lastly, TFA is a highly criticized program for valid reasons.

As a teacher, when I’m told I have no leadership experience. By people who are teachers. I’m not saying there’s more to learn, but please… 🤯

Yes. I teach middle school and let me tell you teachers are the strongest and most quick witted leaders ever, ESPECIALLY middle school teachers

Agree but teach for America discredits all the work teachers do for their degree. They get thrown into needy schools and then leave.

Facts. There is a reason teachers are leaving the field. They realize they can just hop to another job with the management and teaching skills

It would also help leaders get a better understanding of the people they lead. I think every politician should have taught for a minimum of a year, maybe two. I don’t really care what level, as long as their students got good results.

As a former substitute teacher , this is 100% true. There is nothing more powerful than being able to a command a classroom of kids

I mean the fact Congress is like a feral classroom and we're in this mess shows we need to elect more teachers

Fundamentally I agree! If you can teach a class of 25 non-fully developed brains—you can do just about anything in leadership. If you’re good at it.

Nobody knows how to drag you like a 6th grade girl. If you can handle a 12 year old girl telling you that your makeup makes you look tired, you can tackle any global crisis.

Teach for America is a trash program. Using teaching as a stepping stone to other professions is a disservice to students and education system.
